يدرس باحثون في حديقة حيوان سان دييجو بالولايات المتحدة ما كان يطلق عليه اسم "اللغة السرية للأفيال.
ويراقب فريق البحث الأصوات التي تستخدم في التواصل بين هذه الحيوانات والتي لا يمكن للبشر الاستماع إليها.
ونحن نعرف عن الصرخات المدوية التي تطلقها الأفيال، غير أن هذه الحيوانات تصدر أصواتا أخرى كالهدير.
ولا يمكن للأذن البشرية التقاط سوى ثلث هذه الأصوات، فثلثاها يصدر بذبذبات شديدة الانخفاض عصية على الالتقاط.

تحذير من الحيوانات المفترسة؟

ويتابع الباحثون صدور هذه الأصوات ويحاولون ربطه بما تقوم الأفيال بفعله أثناء ذلك.
وقد توصل الفريق بالفعل إلى أن الحوامل من إناث الأفيال تستخدم هذه الأصوات منخفضة الذبذبة لإبلاغ بقية القطيع بأنها على وشك وضع حملها.
ويعتقد الباحثون أيضا أن هذه الأصوات تنبه الأفيال أيضا إلى ضرورة الحذر من الحيوانات المفترسة، كالضباع التي بإمكانها افتراس صغار الفيلة رغم كبر حجمها.

تعلم كيف تقرأ ألف كلمة في الدقيقة
تتزايد عدد المؤسسات التدريبية التي تقدم دورات للتدريب على القراءة السريعة. الكثيرون يقبلون على تلك الدورات كما ترسل إليها الشركات موظفيها، على أمل مضاعفة سرعة القراءة لمواجهة تحديات عصر "فيض المعلومات".
يبلغ متوسط سرعة القراءة للإنسان العادي 200 كلمة في الدقيقة، لكن الرئيس الأمريكي السابق جون كينيدي على سبيل المثال كان يقرأ بسرعة تفوق الألف كلمة في الدقيقة، كما يقول مدرب دورة القراءة السريعة يورغن هامبه، والذي يؤكد أن المرء "يتعلم القراءة من جديد للمرة الثانية" من خلال دورته التدريبية.
ومن يشارك في دورة لتعلم القراءة السريعة، يتعلم أيضاً الكثير حول النشاط الدماغي المعقد الذي يمارسه الإنسان عند القراءة، فالعين قادرة على إدراك عدد محدد من الرموز،  يقوم الدماغ بترجمتها إلى كلمات وجمل ذات مدلول. والشخص البالغ لا يكاد يلاحظ تعقيد هذه العملية، ولا يتذكر كيف بدأ تعلم القراءة، ففي البداية تلعب القراءة بصوت عال دوراً مهماً في انسجام الحروف وتناغم اللغة. غالبية البالغين يقرأون كل كلمة على حدة، تماماً كما يفعل الأطفال، وذلك عن طريق نطق الكلمات المقروءة داخلياً. القراءة بصوت عال والقراءة الداخلية تشكلان أول عوائق القراءة السريعة، والتي يمكن التغلب عليها من خلال الطريقة الجديدة.
